People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. One feels tired or tense, anxious or sad. Lack of sleep could play a larger role in how you are feeling than you might realize. It could be a symptom or a cause of your distress.
Sleep disorders can be addressed by a specific cognitive behavioral approach that could help you improve or resolve your sleep issues without medication. If medication is indicated during treatment, you would decide how to proceed once you and I discuss the matter. You may be sleeping too little (Insomnia) or too much (hypersomnia). If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your sleep, but not sure whether or not you have a sleep disorder, consider the following.
In general, you may have insomnia if at least 3 nights per week, for at least one month, even though you have the opportunity to sleep, you have difficulty falling asleep, frequently wake up and find it difficult to fall back to sleep afterwards, or wake up earlier in the morning than you would like.
Or, you may have hypersomnia, meaning that you sleep excessively, if, for at least three times per week for at least a three month period, you feel very sleepy (even though you sleep at least 7 hours) and you either fall asleep several times in the same day, have a main sleep of more than 9 hours that isn’t refreshing or you have difficulty feeling fully awake after abruptly awakening.
